| So after a few unsuccessful weeks, and shooting right underneath of a big doe the week before, I was really starting to give up this season...to give you a little back-story...I am blessed with the fact that I can hunt in my backyard, but I also work 3pm-11pm, so by the time i get home, unwind, and have the all important after work whiskey, I really want to sleep in so i usually don't end up hunting in the mornings except for the weekends...well, one tuesday morning I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep, something told me that I should go hunting. Well, I looked outside and it was already light out, i said to myself I haven't seen much this season, and I missed a doe last weekend...what's the worst that can happen? so i slowly made my way to the cave...threw on some camo and grabbed my bow, and for the first time ever- decided to stalk hunt. I slowly made my way along the edge of my neighbors 700yd. cornfield, the wind was perfect...I had a cornfield to my left, thick hardwoods to my right that I knew the deer were using as a bedding area. About 200 yards into my stalk, i noticed a glimmer of antler in the brush. I dropped to a knee and waited to see if anything would materialize, I have always been taught "there is plenty of time to count the points when the deer is on the ground" so thats what I always try and do. After about 10 minutes of waiting, I could see the deer standing up, he broke out of the brush and started walking into the corn, I was already at full draw. I didn't have a shot in the brush, and I don't have a shot in the corn...so i had to stop him...i let out a small grunt with my mouth and he stopped...I took a breath, released the arrow and it flew true (thanks to the FOB<---there is a little plug for Paul ) and that Grim Reaper Extra Cut made very very VERY short work of the blood trail...i grabbed my bloody arrow and smiled at the dripping bright red bubbly gold...I started counting points and nodded at 3...laughed at 4...got dizzy at 6....started shaking at 7...proceded to jump up and down like an idiot at 8...and fell down yelling at 9..this NY bruiser went 15 yards before he piled up. | |
